Where it all began
It all started for Peter at King Henry VIII school, one of our supported charities through the foundation. 100 goals in one season, a particular highlight!
The early years
Following a spell in the youth team with boyhood club Coventry City, Peter was signed by Aston Villa in April 2001 at the age of 16. A little over a year later Peter was a part of the side that won the 2002 FA Youth Cup, beating an Everton team featuring a little known striker named Wayne Rooney.
A premier arrival
Peter would make his Premiership debut at the age of 19 in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle at St James’ Park. The first of 66 appearances for Aston Villa across five seasons with the former European Cup winners.
History maker
During his time with Villa Peter would make his own unique bit of history (the first of many during his career!) as the first ever goalscorer with a winter yellow ball with his opener against Portsmouth in November 2004. Impress your friends with that quiz fact!
International honours
Peter would also represent his country at under 21 level, gaining 17 caps between 2004-2007 and scoring three goals.
In January 2007 Peter departed Aston Villa to join Cardiff City, a club he would become forever linked with in over a decade of service to the Bluebirds.
His first goal coming in a 2-0 win over Barnsley at Ninian Park a month later.
In his first full season with the club Peter played a key role in the side which reached the FA Cup final of 2008, the first time Cardiff had reached the showpiece event in 81 years.
Peter’s contribution in the run to the final included a memorable goal away at Middlesbrough in the quarter final.
After 99 years, Cardiff made the move over the road from Ninian Park to the brand new Cardiff City Stadium in 2009. Peter was one of the scorers as Cardiff made their league bow in their new home.
The 2009/10 season was certainly a standout year for Peter from a goals perspective - 25 of them in all! His 20 goals in the league made him joint-top goalscorer in the division during that year. This was the first and so far only time a midfielder has achieved that distinction.
Included in those 25 goals was Peter’s self confessed favourite of his career - that memorable strike at Leicester City in the first leg of the Championship Play Offs.
Peter’s efforts during that year led him to being awarded a spot in the divisional team of the year for 2009/10. This was an honour he would go on to achieve two more times (11/12 & 12/13), with three appearances in the league’s best eleven for a season the most for an individual in the Championship era.
He would also go on to win the Football League Awards Goal of the Year for his strike versus Barnsley in 2011.
Championship champions
After another run to a domestic final with the Bluebirds, this time the League Cup in 2012, a year later Peter helped seal top flight football for Cardiff City for the first time since 1962.
In their debut Premier League campaign, Peter netted Cardiff’s first ever away Premier League goal vs Hull City.
Top championship honours
In 2015, Peter was named in the Championship’s Team Of The Decade.
Forever a Bluebird
Peter departed Cardiff City in June 2017 after 10 and a half seasons as a Bluebird, with 457 appearances (7th in the club’s all time appearance holders) and 96 goals (9th in the club’s all time top scorers).
